US college application final review checklist

A final review should catch more than spelling errors. It should show whether the application answers each question, represents the student accurately and includes the documents required by each college.

Build a college-by-college requirement list

Record each institution’s current deadline, application round, required writing, testing policy, recommendations and any portfolio or financial-aid requirements. Check the live application and the college’s own admissions pages. A deadline or requirement for one university is not a rule for the rest of the list.

Common App distinguishes the shared personal essay, college-specific questions and writing supplements. Some supplements appear in response to other answers, so review the whole application rather than relying on a separate essay folder.

Read the personal essay for what it adds

Ask what a reader learns that is not already evident from grades or activities. Check that the reflection follows from the experience described. Remove claims that sound impressive but are unsupported, and preserve the student’s own language wherever it expresses the idea clearly.

Read the essay aloud. A sentence can be grammatically correct and still sound unlike its author. Feedback should help the student make deliberate revisions; the experiences, judgement and writing remain theirs.

Audit activities and honours against the facts

Check roles, organisation names, dates, hours and stated outcomes against the actual record. Distinguish participation from leadership and a project in progress from a completed result. An activity description should explain the work clearly enough that a reader unfamiliar with the organisation can understand it.

Look for inconsistency between the activities list and essays: different role titles, incompatible timelines or two descriptions of the same outcome. Resolve these before submission, and do not upgrade a claim merely to make it sound more selective.

Make every supplement answer its own question

Place the prompt above each response and underline the words that define the task. Does the response address all of them? For an institutional-fit essay, verify the programme names and explain the connection to the student’s interests. A paragraph that works unchanged for any university usually needs more thought.

Read the set together for repetition. A personal essay, community response and academic-interest essay can reinforce one another without retelling the same event. Check limits in the application itself, including whether a field counts words or characters.

Check the submission itself

Review the application preview carefully, confirm that required sections are complete and check recommendation or school-document status. Submission of the application and receipt of supporting materials are distinct things; follow each college’s instructions for both.

After submitting, retain the confirmation and check the applicant portal for missing items or further steps. If a material error is discovered, use the institution’s published update process rather than assuming a change elsewhere automatically updates an already-submitted application.

Aureus can review the Common App essay, supplements or wider application. Send the college list, exact deadlines and current materials so the review can focus on the most consequential work.
